Dr Jacob Daniel Portelli was called to the bar in 2020 after having read law both locally, as well as in the United Kingdom. During his time at University, he interned with Vincent Micallef and Associates, assisting in criminal, family and civil law matters. He later joined E&S Group, an international multi-disciplinary firm assisting with legal matters in the Commercial, Company, Maritime, Aviation and iGaming industries. He also assisted the firm with business development matters.
Jacob holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Master of Advocacy degree from the University of Malta. He completed his studies with a legal paper on Investor Protection in Financial Services. Academically, whilst he was in the United Kingdom, Jacob completed his Master’s degree in International Business and Corporate Finance Law at the Liverpool John Moores University with a final dissertation on the Development of Anti-Money Laundering Legislation and the Impact of Cryptocurrency on Current Regulations within the European Union.
During his time at University, Jacob had been greatly involved in student organisations, previously occupying the role of President of the Malta Law Students’ Society, Education Commissioner of the National Students’ Council and was the Faculty of Laws Student Representative. Whilst in the United Kingdom, Jacob held a role within the Debate Society Organisation at LJMU. Jacob has represented the University of Malta in the prestigious International Law Students Association debate – Jessup, which was held in Washington DC in the United States of America together with representatives from over 100 countries. The following year, Jacob assisted in Jessup as a Judge in the ‘friendly’ rounds held in Portugal.
Jacob was also a Board Member within the Refugee Appeals Board until 2018 after having been appointed to the role back in November 2017. He has extensive knowledge in the fields of Criminal, Family, Business and Commercial Law which he gained during his years of studies at the University of Malta and the Liverpool John Moores University.
